We recently spent what might be our last trip in the truck camper before moving on to another rig. The weather was perfect, the trails were tough and our campsite was private, despite backing up to a trail (and a bear!).
Fort Mountain State Park in northwest Georgia boasts epic views, waterfalls, and more than 60 miles of hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. You can also boat, fish and swim while you’re there.
It’s a steep and windy road up to the park, with a few viewpoints along the way. We could not have asked for a better site. We prefer a little privacy when we camp, especially with the dog. It was easy to maneuver in, but I don’t know if a bigger rig might have trouble with it. Our site backed up to the Campground Loop Trail, but between check-in on Friday and checkout on Sunday, we only experienced people walking by three times.
When we checked in, the campground staff warned us that bears were very active at the park. We stayed alert and made sure not to leave anything out at our site. On Friday night, just after we cleaned up dinner at the picnic table, I saw a bear 100 yards down the Campground Loop Trail, walking away from us.
We hiked about 15 miles on Friday and Saturday and still had plenty of time to relax at our site and enjoy being unplugged. Our WeBoost didn’t do much to boost our Verizon signal, however we were still able to stream college football Saturday afternoon.
We will definitely be back in our next camper or for some day hikes. Add this one to your bucket list!
