As weekend warriors who sadly don’t get as much time to camp on weekends as we’d like, we usually stay pretty close to home. Luckily, Georgia is home to some of the most beautiful and historic national parks in the country, each offering something unique. Here are six national parks to visit in Georgia:

  1. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area: This park features more than 48 miles of river, perfect for kayaking, fishing, and hiking. Visitors can explore scenic trails and a range of wildlife habitats.
  2. Jimmy Carter National Historic Site: A must-visit destination for anyone interested in American history and politics. Located in Plains, Georgia, this site celebrates the life and legacy of our 39th President. Visitors can explore the humble home where President Carter grew up, visit the museum, stroll through the charming downtown area, and learn about his contributions to civil rights, peace, and humanitarian efforts.
  3. Fort Frederica National Monument: This historic site preserves the ruins of a British fort built in the 1700s to protect the colony of Georgia from Spanish invasion. Visitors can step back in time to explore the fort’s remains, learn about colonial life, and walk nature trails.
  4. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park: This park features ancient Native American ceremonial mounds and artifacts dating back more than 14,000 years. Visitors can walk 8 miles of trails and visit a unique earthen lodge. Plus, the parks features an ADA-accessible paved trail.
  5. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park: This park commemorates the Civil War Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, fought in 1864. Visitors can hike the mountain’s trails, tour the museum, and learn about the battle’s impact on the war.
